*Note: Eczema/Dermatitis is a painful, dry (except in the case of weeping eczema), itchy skin condition that strike millions of people from infant to elderly. As with all medical conditions you should consult with your physician and or dermatologist.

The causes for dermatitis are many from food allergy, nickel allergy, dry air (dehumidified), antiperspirants,, clothing issues to air temperature changes. Pin pointing the cause cause is not always easy nor always obtained but if you can locate the problem and make the changes that need to be made you can help to possibly prevent the condition from reoccurring.

Food and children: Food allergies play a big part in atopic dermatitis during childhood generally before age 6. If you can manipulate an infant/ child's diet you can do well to help their skin.

Eggs, orange juice (citrus juices) and milk have been implicated in eczema flare ups in children. Talk to your physician about elimination diets to be sure or test which if any could be causing the condition. Such diets work best in infants under 2 years of age, after age 6 food generally plays a minimal role in most people.

For adults - If you think you are ingesting a food that has adverse effects on your skin avoid it and see what happens. If the problem clears up then you most likely have a food allergy.

Nickel Rash: Nickel dermatitis is one of the most common dermatitis today. Nickel dermatitis occurs ten times more often in women than men and is often triggered by ear piercing. Oddly enough having your ears pierced can cause rashes in other parts of the body whenever the person comes in contact with nickel containing metal.

Tips - Newly pierced ears should be pierced with surgical steel posts and worn at least until healed (approximately 3 weeks or so).

Certain foods containing nickel could contribute to nickel dermatitis. While this is more in practice in Europe people in the U.S. and else where should note this. Some of these foods are, apricots, chocolate, coffee, beer, tea and nuts.

Staying cool when wearing nickel-plated jewelry or avoiding nickel-plated jewelry when in the heat can help. Perspiration leeches out the nickel in nickel-plated jewelry which can lead to nickel dermatitis.

When buying gold jewelry make sure to get 24 karat gold or higher. If it is less than 24 karat gold there is nickel in it, the lower the karat the higher the nickel content.

Dry Air: Dermatitis is aggravated by dry dehumidified air. This occurs especially during winter months or in dry climates when forced air is used to heat or cool the home.

In the case of heat this is more drying to the skin than other types of heat. By keeping the air moist you can help with the itchy drying effects of eczema. A good humidifier is a must but don't be fooled into thinking one unit in a single room to do it all. Either use one per room or a large unit. Think air conditioning, you need a large unit to air condition a whole house.

Temperature Changes: Going from a warm home to cold outdoors (or vise versa) or even from a hot shower to an air conditioned room can trigger itching. Consider layering your clothes, wearing cotton clothing and avoid hot baths or showers to begin with.

Clothing: Try to wear cotton clothing next to the skin. It is much better than wool, polyester or other scratchy materials. Avoid synthetics or itchy fabrics as well as tight fitting or ill fitting cloths, they can trigger itching and rash.

Antiperspirants: Antiperspirant not deodorant - metallic salts such as aluminum chloride, zirconium chlorohydrate and aluminum sulfate are the active ingredients in many antiperspirants and have been known to cause irritation in people with sensitive skin. If you wish to use antiperspirants look for products containing anti-irritants such as allantoinate, zinc oxide, magnesium oxide, aluminum hydroxide or triethanolamine.

Other suggestions: Luke warm not hot baths or showers.

Moisturize with emollient rich creams or lotions ( my own lotion, Lubriderm*, Moisturel*, Eucerine*, etc.) Also emollients containing urea are good for relieving the itch of eczema.

Oatmeal baths with colloidal oatmeal such as Aveno* or purchase colloidal oatmeal from a pharmacy. 2 cups of oatmeal into lukewarm water or for a soap substitute wrap in a wash cloth securing top with a tie or rubber band, dunk in water then wring out and use to wash. (Colloidal - ground to fine powder that will remain suspended in water)

Evening Primrose Oil has shown significant in improving eczema when taken in high doses though needs to be taken over a long term duration ( at least 6 months) and can be costly. Beware of inexpensive, no-name brand products.

Cold wet dressings either water or better yet milk to help soothe the itching of contact dermatitis.

Calamine lotion, over the counter antihistamines and .05% hydrocortisone cream also can help.

Stats on my product: So far the herbal healing ointment has a 99% cure rate out of those who have tried it. The 1% failure was a severe case of eczema in a very ill elderly gentleman whom no product or medication has worked on. I believe this to be due to the dilapidated condition and the body's inability to heal in this case. For the moderately healthy person, aside from eczema this product should produce great results and has.
